To make this the standard behavior append both commands in one of Octave's startup files e.g. For using the nicer wxt-terminal of Gnuplot, type setenv("GNUTERM","wxt") in Octave. Octave has many dependencies which will be downloaded and installed prior to Octave. To install the most recent version of Octave, type sudo port install octave-devel at the Terminals command line. A list of what MacPorts has available for Octave is here. Type graphics_toolkit('gnuplot') in Octave before plotting. Follow MacPorts installation instructions. Instructions To install octave-control, run the following command in macOS terminal (Applications->Utilities->Terminal). If Octave crashes when plotting use the Gnuplot graphic toolkit instead of FLTK.The new variant become active by default. You can even do this after you installed Octave. To avoid this install arpack with the atlas instead of the accelerate variant sudo port install arpack -accelerate+atlas. The accelerate variant uses Apple's Vector Libraries which have some known bugs that can cause Octave to crash if using certain functions in arpack. When you're ready to install a package, use the install subcommand: sudo port install. Finally, it provides the license and port maintainer. Unfortunately arpack is installed with the accelerate variant by default. Dependencies are resolved automatically by MacPorts, meaning that if you install, for example, the parallel package, MacPorts also installs perl5 if it's not already on your system. If you need Java support add the new Java variant (+java). For the experimental GUI add variant +gui (see above). In MacPorts 2.3.3 the variants atlas, gcc49 and glgui are installed by default (marked with '+' sign in port variants octave output). The available variants for octave are displayed by typing port variants octave.
